Screening
We have the ability to rapidly and efficiently screen for enzymes possessing a required biocatalytic activity. All enzymes have been pre-prepared in plates in 96-well format for speed. Depending on your needs, we can screen:
- A collection of over 700 commercial and in-house cloned enzymes — for a quick solution
- A proprietary strain collection of 2000 strains — for a proprietary solution

We specialize in the quick provision of analytical methods for monitoring bioconversions and determination of product enantiomeric excess. In addition, our synthetic chemistry capability allows us to efficiently prepare suitable substrates for biocatalysis and downstream intermediates. Molecular Biology
Proven molecular biology skills allow us to produce cloned strains, over-expressing the required biocatalytic enzymes. We can also engineer the clones to maximize properties such as activity and enantioselectivity. We use innovative high throughput methods of screening for positive clones to reduce your development timelines while delivering scalable, long term solutions.
We have access to a number of expression systems including our proprietary Pfēnex Expression Technology™, a Pseudomonas-based system. This expression technology increases yields of soluble enzymes, which can dramatically reduce the cost of the biocatalyst and therefore the cost to supply your target.

Enzyme Process Development
For producing biocatalysts, we have ready access to microbial fermentation and associated downstream processing equipment, up to 1,500 litres. Our enzymology capabilities and expertise allow us to rapidly define protocols for enzyme purification. If required, we can use immobilization to improve the economics or stability of an enzyme.
Biotransformation Development
As well as optimization of enzyme loading, enzyme performance and product recovery, we can also offer model development and process engineering (reaction kinetics, simulation and continuous process development), which allows the development of your process to multi-tonne scale.
